Extended Abstract
1. Objectives
Sleep is among the most important night cycles and a complex biological pattern [1]. Poor sleep is in the third problem after headache and gastrointestinal diseases among the elderly [2]. The lack of sleep is associated with illnesses and death in the elderly [3]. To cope with sleep disorders, older adults usually consume sleeping pills; however, these medications usually treat sleep disorders temporarily and cause dependence [4]. Music therapy is a complementary approach that can improve sleep quality by inducing relaxation [5]. One of the pleasant and beautiful sounds is the voice of Quran recitation. It is considered as mystical music with its unique rhythm in Islamic societies [6]. This research aimed to investigate the effect of listening to the voice of the Holy Quran on the sleep quality of elderly living in nursing homes.
2. Methods & Materials
This was a randomized clinical trial study. The study participants were 70 elderly living in Imam Ali nursing home in Malayer County, Iran. They were randomly divided into two groups of control (n=35) and test (n=35). The elderly in the test group listened to the voice of Surah Al-Mu’min?n recitation by Master Parhizkar using headphones for 15 minutes per night before bedtime, for 4 weeks. Surah Al-Mu’min?n was selected after the consultation with the seminary teachers of Qom and Hamadan. The caregivers in nursing homes were requested to remind and educate the use of music players to the studied elderly. The control group only received routine interventions at the department. Before conducting the intervention, a demographic form and the Glock and Stark Religion Questionnaire were completed by the study participants. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was completed by the researcher via interviewing for both groups before and after the intervention. The study had an approximately (8%) sample drop; 5 study participants (2 from the test group and 3 from the control group) discontinued participation in the study. Finally, 65 subjects (33 in the test group, and 32 in the control group) were studied. Parametric tests like Dependent Samples t-test were used for data analysis with a normal distribution. Moreover, nonparametric tests like the Mann-Whitney U test were used for analyzing the non-normally distributed data. To eliminate the effects of confounders (e.g. sleep quality, religiosity, age, gender, chronic diseases, residential status, and a history of sleep disorders) on the observed difference after the intervention, Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was performed. Data analysis was conducted in SPSS and the significance level was set at 0.05.
3. Results
Of 65 elderly participating in the study, 33 were in the test group with the mean±SD age of 73.97±9.91 years. Additionally, 32 participants were in the control group with the Mean±SD age of 64.53±12.75 years. More than half (55.4%) of the study participants were female; (43.1%) of them were married, and the rest were single, widowed or divorced (56.9%). More than (80%) of them had elementary education, and only (9.1%) reported high school education or higher. Approximately (78.5%) of the study participants reported having one or more chronic diseases. The majority of study participants have been living in a nursing home for ≥6 months (95.4%), and their residence status was permanent (67.7%). Most of them (83.1%) reported a history of sleep disorders. The mean±SD religiosity value of the test and control groups were 96.39±10.41, and 101.09±5.73, respectively. Such finding indicates the high level of religiosity among them.
The Chi-squared test results suggested a significant difference in quality, religiosity, age, gender, chronic diseases, residency status, and the history of sleep disorders between the two groups at Pre-test phase (P<0.05). Based on the results of t-test and Mann-Whitney U test, the total score of sleep quality and the scores of its two sub-scales including habitual sleep efficiency (P<0.05) and total sleep quality (P=0.001) significantly improved after 4 weeks of intervention. The total mean±SD score of sleep quality of the elderly in the test group reduced (improved) from 9.27±3.37 to 6.60±3.87. This is while in the control group, the same value increased from 7.16±3.16 to 7.81±2.92 (aggravated). Neither total sleep quality variable nor its subscales changed significantly after one month from the onset of intervention (P>0.05). According to the ANCOVA results, the two groups significantly differed in terms of habitual sleep efficiency (P<0.001), daytime dysfunction (P>0.05), as well as total sleep quality (P<0.001) at the Post-test phase. Thus, after the completion of the program, the level of habitual sleep efficiency and daytime dysfunction, as well as the total sleep quality was significantly better in the test group than those of the controls (Table 1).

Qur??n, (Arabic: “Recitation”) also spelled Quran and Koran, the sacred scripture of Islam. According to conventional Islamic belief, the Quran was revealed by the angel Gabriel to the  Prophet Muhammad in the West Arabian towns Mecca and Medina beginning in 610 and ending with Muhammad’s death in 632 CE. The word qur??n, which occurs already within the Islamic scripture itself (e.g., 9:111 and 75:17–18), is derived from the verb qara?a—“to read,” “to recite”—but there is probably also some connection with the Syriac qery?n?, “reading,” used for the recitation of scriptural readings during church services. The Qur??nic corpus, composed in an early form of Classical Arabic, is traditionally believed to be a literal transcript of God’s speech and to constitute the earthly reproduction of an uncreated and eternal heavenly original, according to the general view referred to in the Qur??n itself as “the well-preserved tablet” (al-law? al-mahf??; Qur??n 85:22).

Form And Content

The Qur??n is markedly shorter than even the New Testament, let alone the Hebrew Bible. It is subdivided into 114 chapterlike units called “s?rahs,” a word used within the Qur??n to designate revelatory passages of an unspecific length (e.g., 9:64). With the exception of the short opening s?rah, recited during each of the five daily Islamic prayers, the s?rahs are ordered roughly according to decreasing length, although this general rule is frequently interrupted. The second s?rah is by far the longest one. All s?rahs are traditionally known by names—many of them by more than one—which appear to have emerged only after the death of the Prophet. S?rah names are usually derived from some conspicuous word in the respective text, such as “The Cow” (the second) or “The Poets” (the 26th), though they do not necessarily identify a text’s main theme. Each s?rah, apart from the ninth, is preceded by the so-called basmalah, the formulaic invocation “In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate.” Many s?rahs (e.g., the second) are opened by detached Arabic letters, the meaning of which has not yet been satisfactorily explained.

What is Quran?

The Qur"an ("Qor-Ann") is a Message from Allah (swt) to humanity. It was transmitted to us in a chain starting from the Almighty Himself (swt) to the angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad (saw). This message was given to the Prophet (saw) in pieces over a period spanning approximately 23 years (610 CE to 632 CE). The Prophet (saw) was 40 years old when the Qur"an began to be revealed to him, and he was 63 when the revelation was completed. The language of the original message was Arabic, but it has been translated into many other languages.

The Qur"an is one of the two sources which form the basis of Islam. The second source is the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw). What makes the Qur"an different from the Sunnah is primarily its form. Unlike the Sunnah, the Qur"an is literally the Word of Allah (swt), whereas the Sunnah was inspired by Allah but the wording and actions are the Prophet"s (saw). The Qur"an has not been expressed using any human"s words. Its wording is letter for letter fixed by no one but Allah.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) was the final Messenger of Allah to humanity, and therefore the Qur"an is the last Message which Allah (swt) has sent to us. Its predecessors such as the Torah, Psalms, and Gospels have all been superseded. It is an obligation - and blessing - for all who hear of the Qur"an and Islam to investigate it and evaluate it for themselves. Allah (swt) has guaranteed that He will protect the Qur"an from human tampering, and today"s readers can find exact copies of it all over the world. The Qur"an of today is the same as the Qur"an revealed to Muhammad (saw) 1400 years ago.

The Quran (/k??r??n/kor-AHN;[i] Arabic: القرآن‎, romanized: al-Qur??nlit. "the recitation", Arabic pronunciation: [alqur??a?n][ii]), also romanized Qur"an or Koran,[iii] is the central religious text of Islam, believed by Muslims to be a revelation from God (Allah).[11] It is widely regarded as the finest work in classical Arabic literature.[12][13][iv][v] It is organized in 114 chapters (surah (سور‎; singular: سورة‎, s?rah)), which consist of verses (?y?t (آیات‎; singular: آیة‎, ?yah)).

Muslims believe that the Quran was orally revealed by God to the final prophet, Muhammad, through the archangel Gabriel (Jibril),[16][17] incrementally over a period of some 23 years, beginning in the month of Ramadan,[18] when Muhammad was 40; and concluding in 632, the year of his death.[11][19][20] Muslims regard the Quran as Muhammad"s most important miracle; a proof of his prophethood;[21] and the culmination of a series of divine messages starting with those revealed to Adam, including the Tawrah (Torah), the Zabur ("Psalms") and the Injil ("Gospel"). The word Quran occurs some 70 times in the text itself, and other names and words are also said to refer to the Quran.[22]

The Quran is thought by Muslims to be not simply divinely inspired, but the literal word of God.[23] Muhammad did not write it as he did not know how to write. According to tradition, several of Muhammad"s companions served as scribes, recording the revelations.[24] Shortly after the prophet"s death, the Quran was compiled by the companions, who had written down or memorized parts of it.[25] Caliph Uthman established a standard version, now known as the Uthmanic codex, which is generally considered the archetype of the Quran known today. There are, however, variant readings, with mostly minor differences in meaning.[24]

The Quran assumes familiarity with major narratives recounted in the Biblical and apocryphal scriptures. It summarizes some, dwells at length on others and, in some cases, presents alternative accounts and interpretations of events.[26][27] The Quran describes itself as a book of guidance for mankind (2:185). It sometimes offers detailed accounts of specific historical events, and it often emphasizes the moral significance of an event over its narrative sequence.[28] Supplementing the Quran with explanations for some cryptic Quranic narratives, and rulings that also provide the basis for sharia (Islamic law) in most denominations of Islam,[29][vi] are hadiths—oral and written traditions believed to describe words and actions of Muhammad.[vii][29] During prayers, the Quran is recited only in Arabic.[30]

Someone who has memorized the entire Quran is called a hafiz ("memorizer"). An ayah (Quranic verse) is sometimes recited with a special kind of elocution reserved for this purpose, called tajwid. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims typically complete the recitation of the whole Quran during tarawih prayers. In order to extrapolate the meaning of a particular Quranic verse, most Muslims rely on exegesis, or commentary (tafsir).[31]

Etymology and meaning

The word qur??n appears about 70 times in the Quran itself, assuming various meanings. It is a verbal noun (ma?dar) of the Arabic verb qara?a (قرأ) meaning "he read" or "he recited". The Syriac equivalent is qery?n? (?????), which refers to "scripture reading" or "lesson".[32] While some Western scholars consider the word to be derived from the Syriac, the majority of Muslim authorities hold the origin of the word is qara?a itself.[11] Regardless, it had become an Arabic term by Muhammad"s lifetime.[11] An important meaning of the word is the "act of reciting", as reflected in an early Quranic passage: "It is for Us to collect it and to recite it (qur??nahu)."[33]

In other verses, the word refers to "an individual passage recited [by Muhammad]". Its liturgical context is seen in a number of passages, for example: "So when al-qur??n is recited, listen to it and keep silent."[34] The word may also assume the meaning of a codified scripture when mentioned with other scriptures such as the Torah and Gospel.[35]

The term also has closely related synonyms that are employed throughout the Quran. Each synonym possesses its own distinct meaning, but its use may converge with that of qur??n in certain contexts. Such terms include kit?b ("book"), ?yah ("sign"), and s?rah ("scripture"); the latter two terms also denote units of revelation. In the large majority of contexts, usually with a definite article (al-), the word is referred to as the wa?y ("revelation"), that which has been "sent down" (tanz?l) at intervals.[36][37] Other related words include: dhikr ("remembrance"), used to refer to the Quran in the sense of a reminder and warning; and ?ikmah ("wisdom"), sometimes referring to the revelation or part of it.[11][viii]

The Quran describes itself as "the discernment" (al-furq?n), "the mother book" (umm al-kit?b), "the guide" (huda), "the wisdom" (hikmah), "the remembrance" (dhikr), and "the revelation" (tanz?l; something sent down, signifying the descent of an object from a higher place to lower place).[38] Another term is al-kit?b ("The Book"), though it is also used in the Arabic language for other scriptures, such as the Torah and the Gospels. The term mus"haf ("written work") is often used to refer to particular Quranic manuscripts but is also used in the Quran to identify earlier revealed books.[11]
